Water Circulation Issue Forces 565-Megawatt Illinois Plant Offline

Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 565-megawatt (MW) Meredosia Power Station, which is owned and operated by AmerenEnergy Generating Company, a subsidiary of Ameren Corporation (NYSE:AEE) (St. Louis, Missouri), was shut down on August 9 because of water circulation issues. The problem occurred when a tree log rammed into screens, causing the recirculating pump to malfunction. The entire plant had to shut down to repair the damage. Officials have said that divers are removing the log so engineers can repair the screens and the recirculation pumps on the turbines.

The coal-fired power station, located in Meredosia, Illinois, became operational in 1948 with one steam turbine, but three more have been added since then. Two of the turbines, manufactured by General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut), produce 58 MW and only run during peak demand. The other two are a 239-MW Allis Chamber intermediate steam turbine and a 210-MW Siemens Westinghouse baseload turbine.
