New LPG Storage and Transport Facilities to Be Built in Ecuador

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ecuador's government is about to build new facilities to modify the storage and transport of the imported liquified petroleum gas (LPG) that arrives by ship transport. Currently, Ecuador stores LPG in a floating ship, entailing high costs that will be lowered once new receiving and storage terminals in mainland Monteverde are constructed. The project also includes an LPG Monteverde-Pascuales pipeline and a storage and distribution terminal at the end of the line in Pascuales in southwest Ecuador.

Two state companies will develop this project. Flota Petrolera Ecuatoriana (Flopec) (Quito, Ecuador), is in charge of constructing the receiving and Monteverde storage terminals and will invest around $150 million in the undertaking. Petrocomercial, a subsidiary of Petroecuador, will deal with the pipeline and the Pascuales storage terminal, investing approximately $120 million. Both parts of the project are in the detailed engineering stage.

Flopec hired the joint venture Intertechma Tecnie y Asociados (Quito, Ecuador), composed by the Brazilian Intertechma Tecnologia and the Ecuadorian Tecnie, to do the engineering studies and the construction. They expect to start constructing the 40,000-ton-per-day terminals in October 2008 and complete them in about two years.

Petrocomercial hired the Ecuadorian Caminosca S.A. (Quito, Ecuador) for the engineering studies, which will conclude in September 2008, after which the construction of the 70,000-barrel-per-day pipeline and the storage terminal will be opened for bidding in October. Construction is expected to start in February 2009 and last 18 months.
