3M Nears Completion of Alabama Expansions

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--3M Company (NYSE:MMM) (Saint Paul, Minnesota) has focused on growth and expansion of its Decatur, Alabama, plant site in recent years and is currently nearing the completion of two major expansions there. Construction is expected to be completed soon for an estimated 100,000-square-foot manufacturing-building addition that will be home to the production of a new line of specialty films designed specifically for the electronics industry. Site preparation for the nearly $80 million project began in August of last year, and PCL Construction Services (Edmonton, Alberta) provided construction management services.

In support of this major expansion of the Decatur site, 3M is also in the midst of constructing a 50,000-square-foot building addition for the installation of a new resins line. Construction of this estimated $50 million project began in April 2007 and is slated to be complete and in operation by the end of this year. Austin AECOM (Chicago, Illinois) provided design-build services, while Fite Building Company (Decatur, Alabama) was awarded the contract for general construction services.

The Decatur plant site has been a growth-oriented site for 3M in recent years. The site currently employs an estimated 900 people or more. There is little doubt the future holds more growth for the Decatur site as it remains a focal point of growth in specialty products.

In addition to the Decatur projects, 3M is also planning to spend an estimated $50 million to expand its operations in Poland. The expansion will support the production of adhesives and protective foils for the aircraft industry. Construction is scheduled for the beginning of 2009 and is expected to be operational towards the end of that year.
