Entergy Louisiana Delays Little Gypsy Repowering Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Entergy Louisiana LLC (Jefferson, Louisiana), a subsidiary of Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana), has temporarily delayed the estimated $1.5 billion repowering project at its Little Gypsy Power Station in La Place, Louisiana, pushing the project into 2009. A federal court had requested additional environmental analyses before construction started. Construction had originally been planned to begin this summer.

The Little Gypsy plant is a 1,251-megawatt (MW) gas/oil-fired power facility and includes three General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) steam turbine/generators with three Riley Stoker and Foster Wheeler (NASDAQ:FWLT) (Clinton, New Jersey) boilers. The first unit became operational in 1961, and the last unit started operating in 1969.

The plan is to replace the 583-MW Unit 3 opposed-fired supercritical boiler with two coal and petroleum coke Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boilers plus auxiliary equipment.

Foster Wheeler Global Power Group was awarded the contract to design and supply the CFB boilers.

The engineering, procurement and construction contract went to the Shaw Group Incorporated (NYSE:SGR) (Baton Rouge, Louisiana).

Construction is planned to begin mid-2009 with completion by 2013.
