Developers Aim to Raise Atlantic Canada's Hydroelectric Generation Capacity by 50%

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hydroelectric power generation in the Atlantic provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island currently represents about 55%, or about 7,700 megawatts (MW), of the region's current total generation capacity of 14,100 MW in operation.

Hydroelectric power developers are proposing 19 projects -- some conventional hydroelectric and some wave/tidal hydroelectric -- to add 3,856 MW, a 50% increase in hydroelectric power. The majority of the new generation would be in Newfoundland & Labrador along the Churchill River with the 800-MW Muskrat Falls and the 2,000-MW Gull Island projects. The total cost for all 19 projects would be close to $9 billion.

Primary developers of the hydroelectric power projects in Atlantic Canada include:
  • Energie NB Power (Fredericton, New Brunswick), a publicly owned utility
  • Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro Corporation (St. John's, Newfoundland), a state-controlled company
  • Nova Scotia Power Incorporated (Halifax, Nova Scotia), a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera (TSX:EMA) (Halifax)
