Weyerhaeuser Nears Start-Up of Oxygen Delignification System at Georgia Mill

The company's multimillion-dollar capital investment is aimed at improving pulp quality to the bleaching operations, reducing the quantity of bleaching chemicals used onsite, and to allow an increase of 38.6 air-dried standard tons per day in daily pulp production that will allow the mill to operate at its permitted production level of 1,200 air-dried standard tons per day. Construction started earlier this year, and the new unit is on schedule to startup during the first week of November.

Metso Paper (Norcross, Georgia) along with Weyerhaeuser corporate engineers provided design and engineering as well as the oxygen delignification equipment.

The Port Wentworth Mill produces 300,000 air-dried metric tons annually of fluff, paper grade pulp, and specialty cellulose fiber products.

Weyerhaeuser recently completed the sale of its containerboard division to International Paper Company (NYSE:IP) (Memphis, Tennessee) in an all cash transaction valued at $6 billion.
