ConocoPhillips Selects Engineering Firm for Deep Conversion Project in Germany

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas) has selected Technip (OTC:TKPPY) (Paris) to perform front-end engineering design for a deep conversion project in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. The company expects to obtain approval and select an engineering and construction company to perform engineering, procurement and construction services for the project in late 2008. Construction is expected to begin in early 2009 and be complete in early 2011.

The project will involve constructing a 60,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) delayed coker utilizing ConocoPhillips technology, a 50,000-BBL/d hydrocracker unit, a sulfur recovery unit, modifications to a 223,000-BBL/d crude unit, a hydrogen plant and off-site utilities. The purpose of the project is to allow the refinery to produce higher-value crude products from a wider variety of crude slates to supply markets in Europe and the U.S. The refinery currently processes low-sulfur crude oil produced in the North Sea. In addition, the refinery will improve clean fuel production of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuels.

ConocoPhillips is the second largest refiner in the U.S. with a crude oil capacity of about 2 million BBL/d at 12 refineries.

  • West Coast: 139,000-BBL/d Los Angeles refinery, 120,000-BBL/d San Francisco refinery, 96,000-BBL/d Ferndale refinery and the 58,000-BBL/d Billings refinery
  • Central region: 306,000-BBL/d Wood River refinery, 187,000-BBL/d Ponca City refinery and the 146,000-BBL/d Borger refinery
  • Gulf Coast: 247,000-BBL/dAlliance refinery, 247,000-BBL/d Sweeny refinery and the 239,000-BBL/d Lake Charles refinery
  • East Coast: 238,000-BBL/d Bayway refinery and the 185,000-BBL/d Trainer refinery
Overseas, the company has two refineries in Germany, one in the United Kingdom, one in Ireland and one in Melaka.
