Industrial Firms Developing $30 Billion in Active Projects in Georgia

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In Georgia, industrial firms are developing more than 300 projects totaling more than $30 billion in total investment value. Two-thirds of these projects are in planning (preapproval) stage of development. The remaining projects are approved and are in the advanced engineering, construction or maintenance-related stages.

In fact, there are about 33 projects under construction in Georgia totaling more than $3 billion. For example, Georgia Power Company (NYSE:GPW) (Atlanta, Georgia) began site work this summer on one of the largest industrial projects in the country at the Jack McDonough Generation Station in Smyrna, Georgia. The $1.4 billion project will add combined-cycle units to the plant and is scheduled for completion in 2012.

The Power Industry dominates project spending in Georgia with about 66% of the future development for new power plants, upgrades and environmental upgrades. Southern Nuclear Operating Company (Birmingham, Alabama) is planning to add two nuclear units at its Alvin W. Vogtle Nuclear Power Station in Waynesboro, Georgia. The project is estimated to cost about $12 billion.

In what could be construed as an example of bad timing, Kia Motor Manufacturing Georgia (Irvine, California) is constructing a $1.2 automobile assembly plant in West Point, Georgia. The company began construction on the project in 2006 when the North American market was much more positive for auto sales. Construction is scheduled for completion by November 2009. The 2.4 million-square-foot plant is being designed to assemble up to 300,000 vehicles per year.
