Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Electricite de France S.A. (EPA:EDF) (Paris, France) continues with the construction of a new 1,750-megawatt (MW) pressurized water reactor at the Flamanville nuclear power plant, in the Basse-Normandie region of France.

Flamanville is a nuclear facility equipped with two Alstom steam turbines with electrical outputs of 1,330 MW each. The new European Pressurized Reactor, a third-generation reactor developed by Areva S.A. (EPA:CEI) (Paris), will be coupled with a 1,750-MW Alstom (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France) Arabelle steam turbine and generator. The reactor will expand the output capacity of the power station to 4,410 MW. For related information, view February 6, 2008, article - France Takes Leadership Role in Developing Nuclear Energy Worldwide.

Site preparation work started in 2006, and construction began in September 2007. At present, EDF continues with the works. In spite of initial irregularities and the difficulties with the digging of the wells, EDF still expects commissioning of the new facility by late 2012.

With the development of this project, Alstom continues to be a key player in EDF's nuclear power park in France, which is equipped with 58 units for the supply of base-load demand. At present, around 85% of French electricity is produced by nuclear energy, while peaking demand is mainly delivered by combustion turbine-equipped facilities.
