Consumers Energy Continues Plans for Environmental Upgrade at Michigan Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Consumers Energy, the principal business of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE:CMS) (Jackson, Michigan), is continuing its quest to improve air quality at the J.H. Campbell Generating Complex near West Olive, Michigan, by installing emission-reduction equipment, such as a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit and flue gas desulfurization scrubbers.

The 1,445-megawatt coal-fired complex consists of three units. Unit 1 is 265 megawatts (MW) with an Alstom/Combustion Engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boiler and an Alstom steam turbine/generator. The unit is already equipped with low nitrogen-oxide burners and an electrostatic precipitator to reduce particulate matter. There are no current plans to install an SCR system on this unit.

Unit 2 is 360 megawatts with a Siemens Westinghouse steam turbine/generator and an Alstom/Combustion Engineering tangential-fired boiler. Foundation work will start this year to install an SCR unit with completion expected by spring 2011.

HDR/Cummins & Barnards Incorporated (Ann Arbor, Michigan) is working as the engineer, and general construction has been contracted to Babcock & Wilcox Incorporated (Barbeton, Ohio). WorleyParsons Group (Chattanooga, Tennessee) is providing electrical services.

The 871-megawatt Unit 3 is equipped with an SCR, which was installed in May 2007. Plans for three scrubbers are being developed to be installed on all three units by 2014.
