Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In December 2008, El Salvador's Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) (San Salvador) launched a bidding process for the development of the detailed design of the 261-megawatt (MW) El Cimarron Hydroelectric Power Plant, which will be built at the highest point of the Lempa River in El Salvador.
CEL's authorities announced that bidding rules were available from December 2008 and that offers would be accepted February 16, 2009. Despite the large number of interested bidders, CEL authorities decided to extend the bidding deadline by one month.
The project, which has an estimated cost of nearly $500 million, will involve the construction of a dam and the use of a 15.3-square-kilometer reservoir. The plant will be equipped with four Pelton Vertical Axis turbines that will supply 687 gigawatt-hours per year of electricity to El Salvador's national grid through a 230-kilovolt, 35-kilometer transmission line. The plant will increase the electric power generated during the dry season at hydroelectric plants located downstream.
Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2010.
Additionally, CEL is also receiving offers to update the feasibility studies validating the environmental analysis of the expansion of the 5 de Noviembre Hydroelectric Plant in El Salvador.
