Florida Biomass-Fired Power Project to Be Relocated

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The developers of a proposed Tallahassee, Florida, biomass-fired power plant have packed up the project and moved it to a nearby county after citizens and community leaders raised objections. Biomass Gas & Electric LLC (Norcross, Georgia) moved the former Tallahassee Renewable Energy Center project and its potential financial windfall to another location.

Now called the North Florida Renewable Energy Center, the project will be located in the town of Port Saint Joe, Florida, which is about a two-hour drive away.

The Port Saint Joe community and businesses have embraced the project, which is still seeking permits to start construction. The power plant will be the same size as originally intended before the construction permit was withdrawn from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in February.

The technology used will be the SilvaGas process owned by Future Energy Resource Company (FERCO). The process, which was developed by the Batelle Memorial Institute, the U.S. Department of Energy and FERCO, converts a feedstock (biomass), which may consist of forest residue, agricultural byproducts and wood waste, into a synthetic natural gas product that can be used to power an industrial boiler replacing the natural gas typically used for combustion.

The project, scheduled to start construction in January 2010 with a 2011 completion date, will generate 42 megawatts of clean renewable energy and provide 25 plant jobs after commissioning.
