Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- Swiss energy company Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (NOK) (Baden), a subsidiary of Axpo Holding AG (Zurich, Switzerland), is planning the construction of a 1,000-megawatt (MW) pumped-storage hydropower plant near Linthal, located in the Glarus canton in the eastern part of Switzerland.
Kraftwerke Linth-Limmern AG (KLL) (Linthal, Switzerland), owned by NOK (85%) and the canton of Glarus (15%), will operate the plant. KLL already controls the three hydropower plants of the Linth-Limmern group: Kraftwerk Linthal (34 MW), Kraftwerk Linth-Limmern (300 MW) and Kraftwerk Tierfehd (110 MW). A new cavern will be constructed between the two existing reservoirs, Limmernsee and Muttsee, and the facility will provide energy to the Swiss grid during peak hours. With the new plant, the capacity of the whole Linth-Limmern group will be increased from 444 to 1,444 MW.
NOK plans to invest $1.6 billion in the Limmern project. The facility will be equipped with four 250-MW Alstom reversible pumped turbines. Construction is slated to begin in January 2010, with completion planned for December 2015.
NOK has received construction permits and has started the bidding process to select engineering and construction firms. In October 2009, authorities will make the final construction decision. The capital must be approved once again because of the current global economic situation.
