Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--StatoilHydro ASA (NYSE:STO) (Stavanger, Norway) will perform a maintenance turnaround at the company's 110,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) refinery in Kalundborg, Denmark. The minor turnaround will take place in September 2009 and will last approximately 15 nonproduction days.
The shutdown mainly entails cleaning and inspection of the powerformer; the naptha, diesel and gasoline hydrotreaters; the visbreakers; the merox; and the gas-separation unit from the old part of the refinery.
The oldest part of the refinery was built in 1961. After an expansion in 1995, the refinery was able to accept a larger proportion of condensate, allowing the facility to produce gasoline with a lower content of the carcinogen benzene. Currently, Kalundborg is divided into the Old Part (Blocks 1 and 2) and the New Part (Blocks 3 and 4) of the refinery. Both parts have practically the same processing units. Consequently, the refinery never halts production while a turnaround is under way.
The StatoilHydro refinery in Kalundborg refines crude oil and condensate (light oil) to petrol, jet fuel, diesel oil, propane, heating oil and fuel oil. The refinery complex also converts sulfur and nitrogen from the desulfurization process for oil products into liquid ammonium thiosulphate. This process has brought about a considerable reduction in emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
