Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Austria's Tiroler Wasserkraft AG (TIWAG) (Innsbruck) plans to construct a new pumped-storage hydropower plant in the Alps to extend its existing Sellrain-Silz plant group. The Kuehtai II project entails the construction of a new 31 million-cubic-meter reservoir and a powerhouse with two reversible turbines that will provide a total of 180 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to the grid. The Sellrain-Silz group consists of the Silz power plant (500 MW) and the Kuehtai I Plant (289 MW) with reservoir basins Finstertal and Laengental. TIWAG owns and operates nine large and 36 smaller hydropower plants in the eastern Austrian county of Tirol.
Project documents and environmental permits will be submitted to the authorities in September 2009 for approval. The entire permitting process is expected to take more than a year to complete. Construction kickoff is projected for February 2011, with completion set for September 2015. In addition to the construction of the powerhouse and reservoir, the project requires various diversions with water catchments in the Stubai and Oetz valley. TIWAG will invest $488 million in the Kuehtai II hydropower plant.
