Penascal Phase II Wind Farm Under Construction

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Oregon-based Iberdrola Renewables has started construction on Phase II of the Penascal Windfarm. Phase I has been in operation since the second quarter of 2009. It consists of 84 Mitsubishi wind turbines, with a nameplate of 202 megawatts.

Penascal Phase II will be identical to Penascal Phase I in turbines and capacity. It began construction early this year and is expected to obtain a commercial operating date before the end of 2009.

Penascal Windfarm will be using an avian radar technology designed for NASA and the Air Force to detect migrating birds. The windfarm is in a major migratory path called the Central Flyway. When the birds come within a few miles of the windfarm, the turbines are programmed to shut down and resume operation once the birds are determined to be in a safe zone away from the turbines.

CPS Energy (San Antonio, Texas) and the South Texas Energy Cooperative have signed a power purchase agreement for a 15-year period to purchase the output of electricity generated from the windfarm.
