Spain's Cartagena Refinery Remains Closed for Economic Reasons

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Repsol YPF SA (NYSE:REP) (Madrid, Spain) is keeping part of the 100,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Cartagena refinery in Spain shut down because of poor margins. The Fuels Area of the refinery was closed in September for economic reasons. Authorities estimate that the processing units in this section of the refinery will be offline until the first week of December.

The 100,000-BBL/d Crude Unit, also part of the Fuels Area, was shut down in September, but was returned online in October for approximately three weeks to produce residue and supply the units in the Lubes Area. At the beggining of November, the 100,000-BBL/d Crude Unit was shut down again. Cartagena is the smallest of Repsol's five refineries in Spain, but the company is expanding the refinery by constructing several new proccessing units, including a 120,000-BBL/d Crude unit, a Vaccum unit, a Delayed Coker unit, and a Hydrogen unit. Despite the current situation of the refining industry, the expansion project has not been affected, and the new plant is expected to be operational by the first half of 2011.
