Researched by Industrial Info Resources Europe (Galway, Ireland)--Magnox Limited (Berkeley, England) has announced that the Oldbury nuclear power station will stop generating electricity in February 2012, which is 10 months earlier than expected. The decision to shut down Reactor One was taken after careful consideration by operator Magnox and site owner Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) (Cumbria, England), in conjunction with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) (Bootle, England), an independent regulator.

After 44 years of safe operations, it was found that further operation of the reactor is no longer economically viable. Both of the site's reactors were scheduled to close at the end of 2008; however, the NDA requested permission from the regulator to operate beyond that date. Unit Two was shut down in June 2011, and Unit One was slated for closure at the end of 2012. Since 2009, the two units have generated an additional 7 terawatt-hours (TWh), worth an estimated £300 million ($478 million), which will help pay for decommissioning. For additional information, see June 24, 2011, article - Oldbury Nuclear Plant in U.K. Avoids Closure.

"The income from electricity sales has provided an important contribution to the funding for our decommissioning program," said Mark Lesinski, the NDA executive director for delivery. "Magnox and NDA will now work with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition into the next stage for the site, which will involve defueling and subsequent decommissioning."

The operation to remove the fuel from both units will be completed in 2013. When most of the structures have been removed, the site will enter the care and maintenance stage of decommissioning by 2027, during which the reactors are left to cool. Final site clearance activities will not take place until 2092 and are expected to be completed by 2101.

Horizon Nuclear Power (Gloucester, England), a joint venture between RWE npower (Swindon, England) and E.ON UK, is planning to construct a 3,300-MW nuclear power plant at Oldbury. Construction is due to begin in 2016. Horizon is also planning a new 3,600-MW nuclear power station at Wylfa. The last two remaining Magnox reactors currently in operation in the U.K. are at the Wylfa site; these two 490-MW units are scheduled to shut down at the end of 2012.
