Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) -- Work is advancing at one of the U.K.'s flagship carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects following the appointment of Foster Wheeler Energy Limited (FWEL) to lead the development team.
2Co Energy (London, England) owns the Don Valley Power Project, a planned 650-megawatt (MW) plant in Hatfield, South Yorkshire, which will be designed to capture up 90% of its five million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. Foster Wheeler has been appointed as Project Management Consultant (PMC) of the 3.6 billion ($4.7 billion) billion power project. Planning permission for the power plant has been granted, with main construction work expected to begin next year.
Foster wheeler, which remain in charge of the project until it is commissioned in 2016, will start by assist 2Co Energy in preparing an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the project build over the next six months.
"I firmly believe, the Don Valley Power Project is the U.K.'s most advanced and economic carbon capture and storage project. Foster Wheeler's appointment will ensure we deliver this ground-breaking project on time to help create jobs, supply low carbon electricity to the region and help the UK meet its ambitious energy security and national carbon reduction. The successful construction of CCS projects requires expertise in both the hydrocarbon processing and power industries which plays to Foster Wheeler's strengths."
2Co Energy rescued the Don Valley Power Project, formerly the Hatfield Project, from administration in May, last year. 2Co Energy acquired Powerfuel Power Limited (Doncaster, England) and the CCS project after Powerfuel admitted that it could not raise the 759 million ($1 billion) needed to construct the integrated gas combined-cycle (IGCC) plant. For additional information see May 13, 2011, article - Leading U.K. Carbon Capture Project Saved From Administration.
In 2009, the project was the only U.K. CCS project to secure funding from the European Commission, to the tune of 180 million ($237 million). For additional information, see October 9, 2009, article - Hatfield CCS Project Tipped for European Funding.
