ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) and Qatar Petroleum (Doha, Qatar) has moved a step closer to construction on its South Hook LNG receiving terminal to be located at Milford Haven in Wales. The venture has received all major permitting approvals, and in November of 2004 retained the services of Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (CB&I) (The Woodlands, Texas) to provide engineering, procurement, and construction (E+P+C) services for phase I of the project. The $800 million phase I entails the construction of an LNG receiving and re-gasification terminal, with a capacity of one billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. The LNG will be sourced from an LNG train to be constructed in the Qatargas II project at Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar, one of six 7.5+ million ton per year LNG trains ExxonMobil plans to construct in conjunction with Qatar Petroleum. The new facilities will include marine unloading docks, three 160,000 cubic meter cryogenic LNG storage tanks, an open rack vaporization facility, and an export pipeline.
CB&I plans to begin releasing the equipment packages of which almost 99% remain, in February and hopes to begin site preparation for the terminal in May of 2005, with a completion target set for 2008. Phase II of the project will entail doubling the import capacity of the terminal to two billion cubic feet per day by the end of the decade.
