A May 2004 study by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas) identified Maricopa County, Arizona, as the leading county in the lower 48 states for future project development. That trend continues in 2005 as Arizona has become one of the nation's hot spots for new industrial project development.
Arizona is currently looking at 73 industrial projects worth $8.7 billion, scheduled to begin construction in 2005 or beyond. Arizona is home to 332 operational industrial plants. Maricopa County, which has 232 operational industrial plants and is recognized as the third largest industrialized county in the U.S., behind Los Angeles County, California, and Cook County, Illinois, is the site for about 60% of the planned industrial project spending in the state. One of the company's investing big in Maricopa County is Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC)(Santa Clara, California). Intel is spending big money to expand its semiconductor wafer manufacturing in the Rocky Mountain Region, including major expansions totaling $2.4 billion in Arizona and Colorado. Both of those projects no longer qualify to be included in the planned industrial project analysis, as they are currently under construction. Now, a third expansion for Intel is in the planned stages. This $2 billion project is being evaluated at one of the company's wafer fabs in Chandler, Arizona. The project would not begin construction until 2006, at the earliest.
