AEP Plans $700 Million Scrubber Project at West Virginia Coal-Fired Power Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). To comply with the Environmental Protection Agency regulations, American Electric Power (NYSE:AEP) (Columbus, Ohio), plans to spend an estimated $700 million to construct a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wet scrubber at its John E. Amos Power Station in Winfield, West Virginia. Mechanical construction is scheduled to start on the first unit in the spring of 2006, with project completion targeted for the late fall of 2008.

The John E. Amos Power Station commenced commercial operation between 1971 and 1973. It is a three unit coal-fired power plant consisting of two 816-megawatt (MW) General Electric tandem-compound turbine/generator sets, with two Foster Wheeler and a B&W opposed-fired dry bottom boilers, and a 1,300 MW Alstom steam turbine/generator set. All units have been equipped with low NOx burners and electrostatic precipitators (ESP’s) to reduce particulate matter and NOx emissions. AEP has spent millions of dollars on emission reducing technology and the emission rates at its plants have been reduced significantly.

AEP has awarded Babcock & Wilcox, Incorporated (Barberton, Ohio), a subsidiary of McDermott International, Incorporated (NYSE:MDR ) (Houston, Texas), the general contractor package for the Amos project. Babcock & Wilcox is also involved with AEP’s wet scrubber project at the company’s 615 MW Unit #5 at the Muskingum River Power Station (Waterford, Ohio).

AEP is involved with emissions projects at its other coal-fired stations, as well. Alstom Power, Incorporated (Knoxville, Tennessee) received the scrubber contract for the 1,364 MW Mountaineer Power Station (New Haven, West Virginia). The Mitchell and Kammer Power Stations, both located in Moundsville, West Virginia, also have scrubbers and SCR’s scheduled for completion by the end of 2009.
