Nigeria Plans to Construct 480-Megawatt Power Plant to Supply Southern Region

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The National Electric Power Authority’s (NEPA) recent transformation to Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) (Lagos, Nigeria), which took place on March 2005, recently stated that in order to have an efficient power supply, it will need over $9.2 billion for its continued operation. PHCN’s current power generation capacity stands at 3,774 megawatts and announced that between now and 2020, it will need over $300 million per year to meet its capacity needs.

In order to meet this need, the federal government awarded PHCN $200 million to help with the construction of a 480-megawatt natural gas-fired simple-cycle power station to be built in Nigeria in Alaoji, a small town in the southern region of the state. The total cost of the power project has been estimated at $250 million and is scheduled for a site preparation kick off by the first quarter of 2006, with completion and commissioning planned for the second quarter of 2007.

PHCN awarded the main contracting bid for the development of the power project to a local company by the name of Rockson Engineering, Limited (Port Harcourt, Nigeria), who subcontracted the major equipment supply contract to GE Energy (NYSE:GE) (Atlanta, Georgia). The contract calls for GE Energy to install four GE frame 9E, 50HZ gas turbines and generators in a simple cycle configuration and all major plant accessories. The turbines will be constructed at GE Energy’s turbine manufacturing facility in Belfort, France and when complete, the turbine/generators are to be shipped to the plant site by the second quarter of 2006. When operational, the power plant will supply the needed power to Nigeria’s Power Holding Company. Industrial information Resources will continue to monitor this project as it goes through it various stages of development.
