Leprino Foods Begins $83 Million Cheese Plant Expansion in Michigan

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Family owned and operated Leprino Foods Company (Denver, Colorado) has begun construction on an $83 million cheese plant expansion at one of its existing plant locations in Allendale, Michigan.

Currently, the footings, underground utilities and support infrastructure construction are underway at the plant site, which is located at 1400 Rich Street in Allendale. Plans call for the construction of an 85,000 square-foot building addition for more manufacturing and cold storage space. Additional cheese processing and packaging equipment will be installed to increase the plant’s capacity for making mozzarella cheese from 60 million pounds per year to over 70 million pounds per year, and also allow the company to offer other products beyond shredded cheese from the Allendale location.

The company selected E. A. Bonelli + Associates, Incorporated (Oakland, California) as the architectural firm for the project and local contractor Lamar Construction Company (Holland, Michigan) will act as the general contractor.

With weather permitting, the building portion of the project will be complete early in the first quarter of 2006, and equipment installations are expected to be complete by mid-summer of 2006. Once the new area becomes operational, the company expects to add 50 jobs to the plant’s current workforce of 200 employees.

Founded in 1950, Leprino Foods is a world leader in premium-quality cheese manufacturing and the largest U.S. exporter of cheese whey products. They operate nine plants in the United States and two plants in Europe and are the primary cheese supplier for major pizza companies including the national franchises of Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and Papa John’s.
