Industrial Infos Top 20 States for Industrial Project Development in 2006

A recent analysis of active projects scheduled to begin construction in 2006 in the U.S. reveals more than 4,590 industrial projects totaling about $177 billion in planned expenditure for capital and maintenance project work. As previously discussed (see January 12, 2006 news article - Regional Analysis of U.S. Industrial Project Spending Going into 2006) planned project spending is up 2% nationwide in 2006 when compared to 2005.
Geographically, the top 20 states are responsible for 77% of the industrial project spending in the U.S.
For the second year in a row, Texas and California are number one and two on the top states list. Texas leads all states with 427 projects totaling almost $18 billion. California is second with 232 projects totaling $12 billion.
Planned industrial project spending is up 48% in Illinois for 2006. Illinois moved up from fifth place in 2005 to third place in 2006 with 190 projects totaling $9.7 billion. This years increase in planned project expenditures in Illinois can be attributed to the approach of construction starts for large-scale coal-fired power unit and environmental compliance project spending in the energy sector.
Other big movers for 2006 include Pennsylvania, which moved from 18th in 2005 to 5th in 2006; Maryland, which moved from 17th up to 6th for 2006; and Minnesota, which moved from 30th in 2005 up to 13th in 2006.
Five states are new to the Top 20 states list in 2006. They are Minnesota, New Mexico, West Virginia, South Carolina and Missouri. All of these states are showing increased project spending in 2006.
States dropping out of the Top 20 list include Kentucky, Michigan, Wyoming, New Jersey, and Colorado. Most of these states are experiencing significant dips in planned project spending.
