Over One Billion Dollars to Be Invested in Environmental Compliance Projects by 2010 in Kentucky

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). America cannot generate the electricity it needs without coal. Coal-fired power plants are the workhorses of the nation’s power industry. It is also the largest source of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulfur oxide (SO2). Kentucky Utilities Company (Lexington, Kentucky), a subsidiary of E.ON AG (NYSE:EON)(Frankfurt, Germany) will invest an estimated $400 million at its 2,226-megawatt four-unit Ghent Power Station (Ghent, Kentucky) on advanced equipment to continue to improve the environmental performance of the plant.

Wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers will be installed on three coal-fired units, one unit already has an existing scrubber, and it will be upgraded by changing duct arrangements. Fluor Enterprises Corporation (Greenville, South Carolina) is providing engineering and construction services. Foundation work has already started, with the project scheduled for completion in 2009.

Fluor is also performing the same service at Kentucky Utilities Company’s 750-megawatt coal-fired E W Brown Power Station (Harrodsburg, Kentucky). Construction will start next spring on a $180 million wet scrubber that will serve three units. Project completion is expected in mid-2009.

Another $140 million will be invested on a scrubber project at the East Kentucky Power Cooperative’s (Maysville, Kentucky) coal-fired H L Spurlock Power Station (Maysville, Kentucky). Alstom Power, Incorporated (Knoxville, Tennessee) is providing engineering and construction for the project. Site preparation will start this fall and completion is scheduled for 2009.
