Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fertil Pampa, a subsidiary of Pampa Energía, is moving forward with its nitrogen fertilizer complex in Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, to be built on an 80-hectare site in the local port. The project is part of a national trend toward fertilizers import substitution, taking advantage of the natural gas from Vaca Muerta and benefits under the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI).

The heart of the complex is the ammonia plant, with a capacity of 1,259,250 metric tons per year of ammonia and 1,606,000 metric tons per year of carbon dioxide, using technology licensed by KBR. The estimated investment value for this facility is US$720 million.

The ammonia and recovered carbon dioxide from the ammonia plant will directly feed the urea unit, which is part of the same complex. The urea facility comprises two production lines of approximately 1,050,000 metric tons per year each, totaling 2.1 million metric tons per year of granular urea, with technology licensed by NextChem. An estimated US$80 million investment will be destined for the installation of the urea plant.

Both projects are being carried out by Maire Tecnimont, hired as the engineering, procurement and construction company. According to the project's current schedule, construction is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2026, with production estimated to start in mid-2030. Once operational, this plant reflects a combined push to turn Bahía Blanca into a regional-scale nitrogen fertilizer hub.
