Summary
Avangrid announced that it has surpassed 11 gigawatts of installed generating capacity in its U.S. power portfolio.Key Milestone
Avangrid, the renewable energy arm of Spain's Iberdrola SA, late last week announced that it has surpassed 11 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity in the U.S. The U.S. market is the second-largest in terms for net energy production for parent company Iberdrola outside of its home country of Spain.Iberdrola announced it produced 25,058 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity last year in the U.S., a distant second to the 64,678 GWh produced in Spain but well ahead of third place Mexico's 11,667 GWh of Iberdrola power.
The company's breakdown by fuel type for U.S. generation last year included:
- 19,123 GWh of onshore wind
- 3,149 GWh of cogeneration
- 2,354 GWh of solar
- 45 GWh of hydropower
- 11 GWh of combined-cycle natural gas-fired generation
Projects Contributing to Milestone
Additions to Avangrid's portfolio that were completed last year and have contributed to the company's 11-GW U.S. milestone include:- The 240-megawatt (MW) True North solar farm in McLennan County, Texas. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.
- The 202-MW Powell Creek solar farm in Putnam County, Ohio. Click here to see the project report.
- The 44-MW Camino solar farm in Southern California. See project report.
- The 60-MW Bakeoven solar plant and 140-MW Daybreak solar plant, both in Wasco County, Oregon.
Vineyard Wind 1
However, those solar installations still don't match the capacity that will be seen from Avangrid's most recently completed project: the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore windfarm off the Massachusetts coast. Avangrid announced that it installed the final blade (the 186th) on the final turbine tower (the 62nd) on March 13. The project has been supplying partial power for some time and still has a few more items to clear before ramping up to its full 800-MW generating capacity. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.Iberdrola won the lease for the project in 2015, and construction began in earnest in 2023, coming under fire after a July 2024 blade failure on an installed turbines caused work on the entire operation to stop and necessitating the replacement of many of the previously installed GE Vernova blades.
Vinyard Wind 1's most recent delay came in December last year, when the Trump administration ordered construction to stop on it and four other offshore windfarms for national security reasons. The order was lifted by a federal judge in late January, allowing Avangrid to continue work and complete installation of its final turbine this month, just ahead of the March 31 lease expiry date for the offshore turbine installation vessel.
Important Market for Company
In its 2025 earnings, Iberdrola reported that its Power and Customer business, which involves power and gas retail, fell 5.3% compared to 2024, with revenue in the segment falling across all countries except the U.S. Iberdrola reported 6.29 billion euro (US$7.23 billion) in net profit in 2025, up 12% from the prior year.Key Takeaways
- Renewables-focused energy company Avangrid announced it has surpassed 11 GW of generating capacity in the U.S.
- Wind power, at more than 19 GWh, was the prime provider last year of Avangrid's U.S. generation.
- Avangrid completed multiple U.S. solar projects last year and this month wrapped up construction on the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore windfarm off the coast of Massachusetts.
