Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Belgian transmission system operator Elia Transmission Belgium (Brussels) presented the plans to build the world's first offshore energy island. Princess Elisabeth Island is to be about 45 kilometers off the Belgian coast in North Sea.
The project is an extension of the electricity grid in the North Sea. It is designed to connect three offshore windfarms in development, totaling 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, to the mainland. It also would create new connections with neighboring countries.
Industrial Info is tracking progress on the three proposed windfarms. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for a list of detailed project reports, and click here for a list of related plant profiles.
The tender process for the energy island is being prepared, as is the environmental impact assessment, permitting procedure, and application for a concession of public space. The construction of the island is due to start in 2024, with completion estimated for mid-2026.
