Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Three major green energy projects in Albany, Georgia, have been completed and are now delivering renewable energy to the grid, supporting the Georgia Public Service Commission's Renewable Energy Development Initiative.
The projects represent an estimated capital investment of $375 million and more than 80 megawatts (MW) of green energy production. That capacity will represent 80% of the initiatives' goal, which was set in 2016, of achieving 100 MW of distributed generation projects by 2017.
Albany Green Energy LLC (Albany, Georgia), a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois), has fired up its $220 million, 42-MW biomass cogeneration facility, located next to Procter & Gamble Company's (NYSE:PG) (P&G) (Cincinnati, Ohio) paper products facility in Albany.
Constellation Energy Group's (Baltimore, Maryland) estimated $12 million, 8.5-MW steam turbine generation project, which will run off the steam from Albany Green Energy, has been completed as well. The generator will deliver renewable energy to the Marine logistics base in Albany via new electricity transmission lines. The U.S. military also has goals of going green and has implemented numerous renewable energy projects across bases in the U.S. and abroad.
Another green energy project is a 31-MW solar energy project near the Marine base in Albany that involves the installation of more than 150,000 solar photovoltaic solar panels. The estimated $140 million project is now producing renewable energy.
The Georgia Public Service Commission's Renewable Energy Development Initiative program seeks to have 1,200 MW of capacity from solar, wind and/or biomass resources by the end of 2019.
