Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Three major green energy projects in Albany, Georgia, are nearing completion and expected to begin delivering renewable energy to the grid and support the Georgia Public Service Commission and Georgia Power Company (Atlanta, Georgia) Renewable Energy Development Initiative.

The three renewable energy projects represent an estimated capital investment of $375 million and more than 80 megawatts (MW) of green energy production. That capacity will represent 80% of the initiatives' goal--set in 2016--of achieving 100 MW of distributed generation projects by 2017.

Albany Green Energy LLC, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois), has begun performing test runs on its $220 million, 42-MW biomass cogeneration facility, located next to Procter & Gamble Company's (NYSE:PG) (P&G) (Cincinnati, Ohio) paper products facility in Albany, Georgia, is nearing completion. The 50-MW renewable energy generation facility is expected to be fully operational by mid-2017 and begin delivering electricity to Georgia Power's grid, and steam to P&G and the U.S. Marine Corps Installation Command base, which is also located in Albany.

Constellation Energy Group (Baltimore, Maryland), another subsidiary of Exelon, is set to complete an estimated $12 million, 8.5-MW steam turbine generation project that will run off the steam from Albany Green Energy by June of this year. The generator will deliver renewable energy to the Marine logistics base in Albany via new electricity transmission lines to the base. The U.S. military also has goals going green and has implemented numerous renewable energy projects across military bases in the U.S. and abroad.

There is also a 31-MW solar energy project near the Marine base that involves the installation of more than 150,000 solar photovoltaic tilt solar panels to generate renewable energy. That estimated $140 million project is expected to be completed by mid-year as well.

The Georgia Public Service Commission's Renewable Energy Development Initiative program seeks to have 1,200 MW of capacity from solar, wind and/or biomass resources by the end of 2019.
