Summary

Two major acquisitions announced this year by Brookfield point to where the company is building out its presence, both in North America and globally: the battery-storage and data center markets, with the latter finding a new foothold in the Middle East.

Charging Up the Battery Sector

Brookfield Corporation, the parent company of Brookfield Asset Management Limited and Brookfield Renewable Partners, is broadening its role in the battery-storage and data center markets through its recent acquisitions of Aypa Power and Oaktree Capital Management, respectively. Industrial Info Resources is tracking more than $80 billion worth of active and proposed projects worldwide from Brookfield and its subsidiaries, including more than $28 billion worth focused on renewables, as well as more than $11 billion worth from Aypa.

According to Industrial Info Resources data, Brookfield Renewable already is party to about $18.5 billion worth of battery energy-storage system (BESS) projects in development; the addition of Aypa, the largest stand-alone battery-storage developer in North America, will take that number to nearly $30 billion.

Aypa's ongoing projects include two Canadian stand-alone BESS units that started construction over the summer: a unit in Elora, Ontario, which is designed to hold up to 211 megawatts (MW), and the Hedley unit in Jarvis, Ontario, which is designed to hold up to 200 MW. Both units will utilize lithium-ion containers and are set to wrap in the second quarter of 2027.

The primary customer for both projects is Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Industrial Info Resources offers more information on these units in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Plant and Project databases, where readers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in reports for the Elora and Jarvis projects.

Brookfield Renewable's own projects in this field include the Star Dairy Solar Plant in Paris, Texas, which comprises 149 MW of generation from photovoltaic (PV) panels and a 205-MW BESS unit. The project, which is managed by X-Elio North America Incorporated, which Brookfield acquired in 2023, is set to begin construction early next year. Subscribers can learn more from a plant profile and a detailed project report.

Aypa currently is owned by The Blackstone Group, which announced earlier this year it would sell its subsidiary to Brookfield for an enterprise value of about $7 billion. By the Numbers
  • More than $80 billion: Total value of active and proposed projects worldwide from Brookfield and its subsidiaries
  • More than $11 billion: Total value of active and proposed projects across North America from Aypa
  • About $7 billion: Enterprise value of Brookfield's acquisition of Aypa from Blackstone

Eyeing a Global Role

Brookfield's expansions go beyond the power-generation market. The company recently acquired the remaining 26% stake in Oaktree, giving it full ownership of a firm that can provide it with a broader slate of global financing and credit solutions. The deal also establishes the U.S. as Brookfield's biggest market, accounting for nearly half of its total revenue.

The Oaktree acquisition already is bearing fruit: Brookfield is in the process of opening a new office in Doha, Qatar, bolstered by its strengthened global credit platform. Brookfield already manages roughly US$20 billion of assets within the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, according to the company. That amount could be doubled through Brookfield's emerging partnership with Qai, a subsidiary of Qatar Investment Authority that focuses on AI infrastructure projects in Qatar and abroad.

The Qatar deal complements Brookfield's increasing global approach to the data center market. One of its portfolio companies, DCI Data Centers, is preparing to expand of its Eastern Creek Data Center in New South Wales, Australia, to improve cloud data services in the region. The facility already handles 11 MW of load, and the expansions will bring it up to 64 MW. Subscribers can learn more from a plant profile and project report.
