Canada got last-minute relief from hefty U.S. tariffs this week. That didn't deter the prime minister's focus on building up the domestic economy. We're Focused on Issues at Home, Carney Says
With an aim of establishing Canada as an energy superpower, the nation's prime minister said he remains committed to building a stronger domestic economy despite a last-minute reprieve on U.S. tariffs.U.S. President Donald Trump has used tariffs to pressure Canada to reconfigure a bilateral trade deal he helped broker during his first term in office. On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the Trump administration had postponed a 50% tariff until the end of Friday while negotiations continue.
"While we continue this work, Canada remains focused on building a stronger, more independent, and more competitive economy at home," he said in a statement.
Canada is the top crude oil exporter to the U.S. economy by far, highlighting their integrated trade networks. But Carney aims to cut U.S. trade reliance and establish the nation as an energy superpower in its own right.
Industrial Info Resources data show the largest oil-production project in Canada by investment value is the US$12 billion Bay du Nord program off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, led by Norwegian energy company Equinor.
The Bay du Nord development in Canadian waters will be a floating production, storage and offloading platform. Industrial Info Resources data show that plans call for drilling around 40 development wells in five locations for the project to support 160,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil production. First oil is expected in 2031. Industrial Info Resources offers more information on this in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Production Database, where readers can find details in a project report.
"Canada is extending its unique advantage in clean, reliable, and affordable power," Carney said in a statement on Monday. "Because when we master energy, we master our destiny."
From Atlantic to Pacific ...
From the Pacific Coast, a bilateral agreement between the federal government and Alberta outlined plans for a new crude oil pipeline that would carry as much as 1 million bpd.Federally-owned Trans Mountain will take the lead on the project, alongside Pembina Pipeline Corporation. The artery is expected to follow the existing Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia, the only network that can currently deliver Canadian oil outside of North America.
Elsewhere, Canada is in the North American lead when it comes to exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) outside the continent. Industrial Info finds that LNG Canada, the first facility of its kind to export from the Pacific Coast, can produce 14 million metric tons of gas in the liquid form annually from two trains located in Kitimat, British Columbia.
The proposed addition of two more liquefaction units--trains 3 and 4--has an investment value of US$12.5 billion.
British Columbia, meanwhile, is under a state of emergency due to ongoing wildfires.

- 160,000 bpd expected from an Atlantic Coast project
