Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In a time when clean energy is a global priority, Canada is actively advancing its net-zero goals through significant investments directed at extending the operational lives of various nuclear facilities. With seven capital spending projects underway, IIR is tracking US$20 billion worth of spending geared toward nuclear life extensions and modernizations in Canada.
BPC Generation Infrastructure (Toronto, Ontario), a key player in Ontario's energy sector, is pushing forward with considerable investments totaling US$11.6 billion across five projects as part of the company's life-extension program (2016) and Major Component Replacement (MCR) Project (2020). These projects are aimed at modernization of several units (units 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8) in Tiverton, Ontario, ensuring the continued operation of its nuclear fleet through to 2064. The projects include the replacement of essential reactor components in each unit, such as steam generators and pressure tubes to enhance each unit's operational life by approximately 30 to 35 years. Work on Unit 3 is underway, and the refurbishments of the other units are in the early development or planning phase and are expected to reach completion between 2027 and 2033.

The Ministry of Energy Ontario also is investing heavily across two projects with sizable spending totaling US$8.40 billion aimed at extending the lifespan of Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Bowmanville, Ontario. The plant is undergoing extensive refurbishment to extend the operational life of its reactors 1 and 4. Both of these are high-probability projects and continue to advance with significant momentum.
According to a press release by Ontario Power Generation, 89% of the refurbishment has already been completed for Unit 1, including the completion of lower feeder and lower body support installation and scaffold removal. Unit 4 refurbishment is currently at 31% completion and has made substantial progress such as feeder tube removal, pressure tube severing, bellows sever, end fitting removal, etc. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
