Summary

The provincial leader of British Columbia said a German offtake agreement should seal the deal for the Ksi Lisims export facility. If sanctioned, it would be Canada's second-largest LNG terminal.

Trade Corridors Open with LNG

An agreement from German energy company SEFE to secure volumes from the proposed Ksi Lisims facility in British Columbia should be an easy layup for government backing, the provincial premier said.

Industrial Info Resources is tracking 12 liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects across Canada, valued at more than US$51 billion, including export developments along Canada's western shores. The Ksi Lisims export terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is slated for Pearse Island off the coast of British Columbia. If sanctioned, it would be Canada's second-largest LNG facility and boast some of the lowest emissions globally.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in November included Ksi Lisims on a list of projects meant to support the nation's economy. The prime minister, a former central bank governor, is looking to cut U.S. trade in half, given the harsh rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump. LNG from the Pacific Coast would support that effort.

Industrial Info Resources offers more information on Ksi Lisims in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Plant and Project databases, where readers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in a plant profile and project report.

David Eby, the provincial leader of British Columbia, said the 20-year German agreement should seal the deal for full federal approval.

"I feel like British Columbia is throwing the ball up, and it's giving the federal government a chance to take that alley-oop and dunk it," Eby said, according to The Canadian Press.

Work started last year on the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) last year. Led by TC Energy, the 466-mile artery would carry up to 3.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) to the Ksi Lisims facility. Approved more than a decade ago, the pipeline was held up by environmental reviews. Readers can learn more from a project report.

According to Industrial Info Resources data, the Ksi Lisims LNG plant is designed for 1.6 Bcf/d, but it has yet to be fully approved. That could happen as early as this week.

Eby had earlier objected to an agreement between the federal government in Ottawa and the provincial government of Alberta that outlines a new crude oil pipeline to British Columbia, saying Alberta was getting special treatment.

Canada is essentially landlocked in terms of trade, with only the Trans Mountain crude oil pipeline and the LNG Canada facility delivering energy outside North America. Readers can learn more from detailed reports for Trans Mountain and LNG Canada.

By the Numbers
  • 1.6 Bcf/d from Ksi Lisims
  • 187.8 million tons of cargo left Port of Vancouver last year

LNG Has Another Role to Play

Elsewhere, Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Limited (MOL) signed an agreement with Seaspan Energy for LNG bunkering operations for car carriers at the Port of Vancouver. MOL identified North America as a key trading route for waterborne vehicle deliveries, and powering vessels with LNG helps lower emissions.

Bunkering is the ship-to-ship transfer of fuels. The U.N.-backed International Maritime Organization is pressing for cleaner fuels such as LNG to help clean up the shipping industry.

The Port of Vancouver reported record volumes last year, with exports of crude oil, grain and potash leading the way. About 187.8 million tons of cargo departed last year, an 8% increase from the previous record set in 2024. Readers can consult a profile of the Port of Vancouver.

Vancouver is Canada's largest port, moving more cargo than the next five-largest ports combined. All the top trading destinations are in Asia, with China accounting for 36% of total international volumes.

Key Takeaways
  • Ksi Lisims LNG could get federal backing this week
  • LNG exports help Canadian trade ambitions
