Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Dominion Energy Incorporated (Richmond, Virginia) received approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) (Rockville, Maryland) to operate its 977-megawatt (MW) Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Power Station in South Carolina through 2062.
V.C. Summer, located in Jenkinsville, was originally licensed to operate for 40 years from 1982 through 2022. In 2004, the NRC approved a license renewal to allow continued operation for an additional 20 years through 2042. With the second renewed license, which was approved on June 30, the unit can operate through 2062.

The power plant, which was originally commissioned in 1982, provides electricity for customers of Dominion Energy and South Carolina-owned Santee Cooper (Moncks Corner, South Carolina). Santee Cooper owns one-third of the plant, while Dominion owns the remaining portion and serves as the main operator.
Dominion already has received NRC approval to extend the operating licenses for the 1,705-MW Surry Nuclear Power Station and the 1,971-MW North Anna Nuclear Power Station, both in Virginia.
"To ensure V.C. Summer's longevity, Dominion Energy regularly performs maintenance and conducts upgrades at the station, including recently replacing the main transformer," the company said in a press release. "Dominion Energy will continue to invest in V.C. Summer to ensure it operates at the highest levels of safety and performance for the life of the station."
Industrial Info is tracking a planned refueling outage on Unit 1, which has a three-loop Westinghouse Electric Company (Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania) pressurized water reactor, scheduled for first-quarter 2026. Subscribers can click here to read the project report.
A nuclear renaissance in the U.S. is being driven by the need to supply power for the growing buildout of data centers, and companies such as Dominion are exploring new-build, next-generation nuclear generation in the form of small modular reactors (SMRs)--including at V.C. Summer.
