EDP Renewables Starts Up Third Phase of Indiana Solar Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--EDP Renewables North America (Houston, Texas), an arm of Energias de Portugal (Lisbon, Portugal), which touts itself as one of the top five renewable energy providers in the U.S., has completed the third phase of a solar project in Indiana, with more construction underway in the state and elsewhere.

With the startup of Riverstart III in Randolph County, Indiana, the Riverstart solar facility, now generating a combined 300 megawatts (MW) of power, becomes one of the largest solar farms in Indiana. Two prior 100-MW phases were operating by 2022. The 100 MW generated from Riverstart III has been allocated through a power purchase agreement to Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington).

Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor IEA White Construction (Indianapolis, Indiana) took over the construction reins for the third phase and already is at work on Riverstart's fourth and largest phase, which will add another 200 MW of solar generation, bringing the plant's generating capacity to 500 MW, which is expected to take effect by the end of this year. A fifth and final 100-MW phase could begin construction next year, putting it on track for completion in 2027. EDP Renewables claims to be the largest renewable energy generator in Indiana, providing about 30% of the state's power from wind, solar and storage. EDP's leading position in the state could be further cemented by the Duff Solar Park in Dubois County, a 100-MW solar facility owned by EDP on which IEA White recently began work. The company also is cementing its presence in other Great Lakes states, such as Illinois, where EDP is building the Pleasantville solar plant near Ipava in Fulton County. EDP Renewables is underway with an even larger solar farm near Lufkin, Texas, that will provide 180 MW of emissions-free generation when completed.
