"The expansion of our relationship with Ares reflects the strength of ENGIE's portfolio of assets and our track record of delivering, operating and financing growth in the U.S.," said Dave Carroll, chief renewables officer of ENGIE North America, in a press release.
The partnership's recent addition of 0.7 GW of operational capacity consists of three unnamed solar projects across the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) markets, and one co-located battery storage project in ERCOT--which operates Texas' electrical grid.
ENGIE said it currently has more than 11 GW of renewable production in operation or under construction across the U.S. and Canada. Much of the onshore renewable project activity being tracked by Industrial Info is attributed to projects in Texas that are set to wrap up around the end of the year.
The company's $275 million Sypert Solar Farm in Rogers, 70 miles northeast of Austin, is expected to utilize about 400,000 solar panels and 90 inverters to provide 260 megawatts (MW) of solar generation. The company's Texas wind-generation projects include the $380 million Big Sampson Wind Project in Ozona, which is designed to generate 270 MW from 60 Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark) turbines. ENGIE has a 15-year virtual PPA in place to provide Sonoco Products Company (NYSE:SON) (Hartsville, South Carolina) with about half of the generation from the facility upon entering commercial operations in late 2025 or early 2026. In order to boost its battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio, ENGIE in 2023 acquired Broad Reach Power (Houston, Texas), a company specializing in battery-storage projects.
Standalone BESS projects in Texas include the $200 million BRP Pavo BESS in Fort Stockton, near the Texas-New Mexico border, and the $110 million BRP Carina BESS in Corpus Christi. The projects are designed to provide about 177 MW and 150 MW of storage capacity, respectively. Subscribers can read more information on the BRP Pavo and BRP Carina projects.
"Our battery development in the U.S is going according to plan, both in capacities and in pricing," executive vice president Pierre-François Riolacci said on the company's fiscal-year 2024 conference call in late February.
