Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Engie S.A.'s (Paris, France) North American subsidiary said last week it has commissioned a battery energy storage system (BESS) at an operational solar plant in Texas, advancing its BESS development in the state.

The approximately 100-megawatt (MW) BESS addition will accompany the Sun Valley solar plant in Abbott, Texas, about 25 miles north of Waco, which began operating last year. The BESS will dispatch energy into ERCOT's grid in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining. The 250-MW solar plant has a power purchase agreement (PPA) in place with consumer goods company Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) (Cincinnati, Ohio) for 200 MW of the output. "Sun Valley is our first 100MW+ co-located energy storage project in the U.S.," said Dave Carroll, chief renewables officer of ENGIE North America, in a press release. "We have more than 2 GW of energy storage already under construction in Texas and other states expected to be commissioned by end of 2024. Together, these projects will contribute to ENGIE's global aspiration of 10 GW of energy storage installed by 2030."

Industrial Info is tracking two ENGIE solar-plus-storage projects under construction in Texas, which includes the $650 million Five Wells solar-plus-storage project in Rogers, about 50 miles northeast of Austin. Construction on the 355.4-MW solar plant and 262.5-MW BESS is expected to wrap up in March. Meanwhile, the $640 million Chillingham solar-plus-storage project in Bell County, in between Waco and Austin, will provide 360 MW of solar power utilizing photovoltaic (PV) panels and feature a 154-MW BESS facility utilizing lithium-ion technology. The latter project is expected to wrap up around the end of 2024. Subscribers can read reports on the Five Wells and Chillingham projects.

In terms of projects in development, ENGIE is evaluating construction of the standalone, 303-MW Platinum BESS facility in Savoy, in north Texas' Fannin County near the Texas-Oklahoma border. The facility will use batteries developed by Sungrow Power (Hefei, China). Click here to read the project report.

In an effort to expand its energy storage capacity in the Lone Star State, ENGIE earlier this year acquired Broad Reach Power LLC (Houston, Texas) and its assets, most of which are on the ERCOT grid.
