Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ethiopia is stepping up investment in its power infrastructure, with Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) setting a total corporate budget of 313.8 billion Birr (US$1.9 billion) for fiscal year 2026-27. Of the total, 70.3% is earmarked for capital expenditure, highlighting the government's focus on expanding generation and clearing a backlog of transmission infrastructure. EEP is targeting 9,770 megawatts (MW) of installed generation capacity and 32,134 gigawatt-hours of electricity production during the fiscal year, reinforcing Ethiopia's ambition to establish itself as a major renewable-energy hub in East Africa.

Industrial Info Resources data show more than 100 active power capital and maintenance projects in Ethiopia, valued at US$48.7 billion.

The investment comes as Ethiopia seeks to raise electricity coverage from about 54% toward a national target of 75% by 2030. EEP reported that installed generation capacity has already more than doubled over the past seven years, reaching about 9,752 MW, while national electricity access has increased from 44% to approximately 54%. The World Bank-supported National Energy Compact also confirms the 75% access target for 2030, with grid expansion and clean-energy infrastructure identified as key priorities.

Transmission is emerging as the critical enabler of Ethiopia's next phase of power-sector growth. EEP has identified 56 transmission infrastructure projects for 2026-27, including 27 under construction, 22 targeted for completion and seven in tendering; 13 projects are scheduled for full commissioning during the year.
