Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India added 8.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage capacity between January and June 2026, marking an approximately 84-fold increase from the 98.4 megawtt-hours installed during the corresponding period in 2025. According to Mercom India Research, the country's cumulative installed battery storage capacity reached 9.3 GWh by June 2026, highlighting the rapid expansion of its energy storage sector.
Standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) accounted for 83% of cumulative installations, with Rajasthan leading state deployment at 36%, followed by Gujarat at 20%. The expansion reflects growing investment in storage infrastructure to support grid stability, manage peak electricity demand and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. Battery storage enables surplus electricity generated during periods of high renewable output to be stored and used when generation declines or demand increases.
India's energy storage procurement pipeline also expanded, with approximately 28 gigawatts (GW) of storage capacity tendered and around 9 GW auctioned during the first half of 2026. These developments indicate growing momentum in project procurement, although tendered and auctioned capacity should not be confused with operational installations. As India advances its renewable energy ambitions, battery storage is expected to play an increasingly important role in improving power system flexibility, strengthening electricity supply reliability and supporting the transition towards a cleaner and more resilient grid.
