Researched by IIR News Intelligence (Sugar Land, Texas)--According to India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the nation is on track to add 7.5 to 8 gigawatts (GW) of wind power capacity during Fiscal Year 2026-27. The country added 2.42 GW between April and August 2026, taking cumulative installed wind capacity to 58.52 GW as of August 31. India added more than 6 GW of wind capacity during Fiscal Year 2025-26, indicating continued expansion of the sector.

At an indicative capital cost of ₹7 crore (approximately US$0.73 million) per megawatt (MW), the planned 7.5 to 8-GW addition would represent an estimated investment of approximately US$5.5 billion to $5.8 billion. This is an indicative calculation based on the reported per-MW capital-cost benchmark and should not be interpreted as an officially announced MNRE investment requirement.

The planned addition supports India's longer-term objective of increasing installed wind capacity to more than 100 GW by 2030, alongside the broader target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity. India currently has approximately 24 GW of annual wind turbine manufacturing capacity, while wind-sector exports were reported at around ₹12,000 crore in the previous year, highlighting the country's expanding domestic manufacturing and export base.
