Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India's state-controlled Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) is planning to increase its power-generating capacity nearly 400% over a 10-year period. New projects in the pipeline would expand the power capacity of the company from the current 2,740 megawatts (MW) to 11,195 MW, Chairman Surender Mohan said.
The 500-MW expansion at the TPS-11 thermal power station at Neyveli would begin commercial operations in February and March, increasing the installed capacity of TPS-11 from 1,470 to 1,970 MW.
Work also is in progress on a 1,000-MW project at Neyveli, which will replace the old 1960s-era TPS-1, which is scheduled to be downsized to 300 MW by March 2015 and completely shut down by September 2015. The first 500 MW of the new plant are expected to be commissioned in August 2017, with the second unit coming online in February 2018.
NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL), a joint venture with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, soon will see a 1,000-MW, coal-fired project at Tuticorin begin operations. The first 500-MW unit will be commissioned in February, and the second unit will begin operations in May.
The 4,000-MW, coal-fired Sirkazhi thermal project in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, is under active consideration, and land allocation issues are being pursued with the government.
Another joint venture, with UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadhan Nigam Limited, will set up a 1,980-MW, coal-fired plant at Ghatampur, for which land acquisition is in progress.
NLC also is moving into wind energy and solar power. A 51-MW wind-power project in Thirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, is scheduled to begin power production this year. Two 10-MW solar power projects also are under active consideration in Neyveli and Barsingsar, Rajasthan.
