Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The first phase of Jindal Steel and Power Limited's (BSE:532286) (JSPL) (New Delhi, India) 6 million-ton-per-year, greenfield integrated steel project in Angul, Odisha, has been completed with the commissioning of a 2.5 million-ton steel melting shop (SMS) with an allied unit.

"The electric arc furnace of the SMS at 250-ton capacity is the largest in size in India and second-largest in Asia," said Dinesh Saraogi, executive director projects at Angul. "Commissioning the SMS is an important milestone for our project."

In 2012, JSPL commissioned a 1.5 million-ton-wide plate mill at Angul that is capable of producing 5-meter-wide plates, making it India's widest plate mill. The 3.5 million-ton balance of total production capacity at the integrated steel mill will be commissioned by the end of 2015.

The technology for the SMS was supplied by SMS-Siemag (Dusseldorf, Germany) and has high flexibility in terms of raw material feed, as it can use solid hot feed, solid cold feed and hot metal feed. The hot direct-reduced iron (DRI) produced from the DRI plant will be fed directly into the electric arc furnace at 550 Celsius. It is also equipped with the latest features, such as break-out prediction system (BOPS), electromagnetic mold control level (VUHZ) and stopper control through electro servo actuator (VEMA).
