Summary

Venture Global said it secured an LNG offtake agreement with ConocoPhillips. The U.S. supermajor already is wading into the U.S. LNG sector with deals on the Pacific and Gulf coasts.

20-Year Offtake Agreement Starts in 2030

Capitalizing on a Louisiana footprint that accounts for roughly a quarter of the U.S. LNG export potential, Venture Global said it signed on offtake agreement with ConocoPhillips.

The Calcasieu Pass and Plaquemines terminals, both operated by Venture Global, can take in as much as 5.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in feed gas. According to Industrial Info Resources data, this accounts for about 25% of the total inputs for conversion to LNG.

Between the two, Plaquemines is the largest, with a peak feed gas capacity of 3.8 Bcf/d, making it the second-largest U.S. facility of its kind after Cheniere Energy's Sabine Pass terminal.

Industrial Info Resources offers more information on these facilities in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Plant Database, where readers can read detailed profiles of Calcasieu Pass, Plaquemines and Sabine Pass.

On Friday, Venture Global announced that U.S. supermajor ConocoPhillips agreed to secure 1 million metric tons per annum of LNG from its portfolio for 20 years, starting in 2030.

"This agreement reflects continued market confidence in our proven ability to provide reliable, low-cost U.S. LNG quickly and on a large scale," said Mike Sabel, the chief executive officer of Venture Global.

Venture Global exported 127 cargoes laden with LNG during the three-month period ending June 30, a 42% expansion from the same period last year. During the second quarter, the company added that it delivered its 1,000th cargo, four years after its first deliveries.

The company, meanwhile, already has plans to expand its footprint in Louisiana. The second phase of the Calcasieu Pass terminal would have a design capacity of 20 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of LNG, according to Industrial Info Resources data.

Industrial Info Resources is tracking more than $19 billion worth of active and proposed projects related to the second phase of Calcasieu Pass. Readers can learn more from a detailed list of project reports.

For ConocoPhillips, this is its latest venture into the U.S. LNG space. Last year, it signed a 20-year offtake agreement with Sempra Infrastructure to secure 4 MTPA of LNG offtake from the Port Arthur LNG terminal. Readers can learn more from a plant profile.

In May, it joined the likes of Exxon Mobil Corporation in announcing preliminary offtake deals for the proposed Alaska LNG facility. Including a lengthy pipeline from the North Slope, the project was the recent source of diplomatic tensions when U.S. President Donald Trump overstated investment commitments from South Korea on the project. By the Numbers
  • 1 MTPA for Conoco from Venture Global's portfolio
  • 19 billion cubic feet in feed gas was a U.S. record-setter last year

U.S. at the Top of the Heap

The United States remains the world leader in LNG exports, even though feed gas running to the nine operational terminals remains below late-2025 peaks of just over 19 Bcf/d. Industrial Info in its NATGAS Today report for Monday showed feed gas volumes were curtailed in part because of maintenance at the Freeport LNG export terminal in Texas.

Feed gas as of Monday was about 17 billion cubic feet. Levels are becoming increasingly important because of the conflict simmering in the Middle East. Maritime shipments of commodities remain at risk, with the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center reporting two vessels were attacked in the region on Sunday, while another was forcibly rerouted off the coast of Oman on Monday.

Qatar, among the world leaders in LNG exports, has seen its own supplies limited due to damage to its infrastructure early in the fighting. QatarEnergy has already told its European clients of delayed shipments, while the nation's energy minister said it could take as long as three years to complete repairs to liquefaction units damaged by drone strikes.

Key Takeaways
  • Conoco takes another slice of the U.S. LNG pie
  • LNG sector is under pressure globally from Middle East conflict
