Researched by IIR News Intelligence (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Sultanate of Oman is seeking to reduce its long-standing dependence on natural gas by building a diversified electricity mix anchored in clean and renewable sources. Under Oman's energy roadmap, renewable energy is expected to account for 30-40% of total power generation by 2030, rising to 60-70% by 2040, with a long-term goal of achieving a fully renewable energy system by 2050.
The transition is aimed at strengthening energy security, improving environmental sustainability and cutting carbon emissions.
To deliver these ambitions, the country has set out a development pipeline targeting up to 12 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity by 2031. The program comprises more than 20 utility-scale projects, covering large solar photovoltaic plants, onshore wind farms and a waste-to-energy facility, signaling a deliberately diversified approach to clean power deployment.
A central pillar of the strategy is the rollout of six mega-scale solar photovoltaic independent power producer projects, known as the Solar PV IPPs 2030 and Solar PV IPPs 2031. Each project is designed with a capacity of 1 GW, with commercial operation planned between 2030 and 2031, positioning solar energy as the backbone of the future power mix.
In parallel, the wind energy program is being advanced across several strategic regions, including Dhofar, Duqm, Sadah and Mahout. Together, these projects are expected to contribute a combined capacity of around 1.8 GW by 2030, taking advantage of the country's strong and consistent wind corridors to complement daytime solar generation.
The roadmap also includes the development of a waste-to-energy facility in Barka, further broadening the renewable portfolio and supporting integrated waste management objectives.
Taken together, the planned solar, wind and waste-to-energy investments underscore Oman's intention to position itself as a regional leader in renewable power.
