One of Arizona's Billions' Worth of BESS Projects Changes Hands

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (Copenhagen, Denmark) acquired a major battery energy storage system (BESS) project from Strata Clean Energy LLC (Durham, North Carolina) in Arizona, where Industrial Info is tracking billions' worth of BESS projects.

At full capacity, the standalone, $450 million Scatter Wash BESS project in Phoenix will be able to provide about 250 megawatts (MW)/1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy by utilizing Tesla Incorporated's (NASDAQ:TSLA) (Austin, Texas) Megapack lithium-ion battery technology. After entering commercial operations, which is expected in the first half of 2025, the unit will begin providing power to utility Arizona Public Service (APS) (Phoenix), the largest electric utility in Arizona, under a 20-year tolling agreement. Industrial Info is tracking billions' worth of both standalone and colocated BESS projects in Arizona, including Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) subsidiary Recurrent Energy LLC's Papago BESS in Tonopah, in Maricopa County. Also underway and expected to wrap up in second-quarter 2025 is construction of Longroad Energy Holdings LLC's 300-MW BESS addition at its Sun Streams 4 energy center, part of the company's larger Sun Streams complex in Maricopa County, where a photovoltaic (PV) solar plant is expected to be completed along the same timeline. BESS units also are colocated with wind energy, and AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia) is developing 250 MW of energy storage as part of the West Camp Wind project in Navajo County, about 80 miles east of Flagstaff, which will feature a 500-MW windfarm.
