Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Based on 2019 data, approximately 19% of the greenhouse gases in South Korea are emitted from steelmakers, with POSCO's (Pohang, South Korea) emissions accounting for a substantial portion of this.
In July, POSCO signed a memorandum of understanding with Primetals Technologies (London, England) to develop a demonstration plant for hydrogen-reduction steelmaking.
The hydrogen-based steelmaking technology that POSCO will apply to a planned demonstration plant is different from technologies promoted by European, U.S., Chinese and other overseas steelmakers using a shaft furnace. POSCO says that its technology can reduce more carbon dioxide because it does not need a pre-treatment process of iron ore pelletizing.
