Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Specialty contractor Primoris Services Corporation (NYSE:PRIM) recently racked up $1.2 billion worth of project awards for its energy business, including $1.1 billion for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of utility-scale solar-power projects and about $100 million for the expansion of several gas-fired power plants. Industrial Info already is tracking more than $3.6 billion worth of active and planned projects featuring Primoris, more than 70% of which is attributed to solar-energy and battery energy-storage system (BESS) developments.

"The solar awards, which include approximately 800 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage systems, demonstrate progress toward our strategic goal to expand our solar service offering," said Tom McCormick, the chief executive officer of Primoris, in a press release.

Primoris already is on track to complete a pair of projects later in the year for Enel Green Power North America, a subsidiary of Enel SpA (Rome, Italy), in northern Texas. The larger of the two is the Estonian Solar Facility in Cooper, about 80 miles northeast of Dallas. It comprises a $350 million solar plant, which is expected to generate 204.47 megawatts (MW) from panels provided by First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona), and a 102.5-MW, $150 million BESS that will utilize equipment from AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia).

Enel also contracted Primoris to provide EPC services for its Ables Springs Solar Plant in Terrell, Texas, just east of Dallas. The 150-MW, $210 million solar plant will be supported by a 100-MW, $95 million BESS unit. The latter is expected to wrap up in the fourth quarter, but the solar plant itself likely will not wrap up until next year. Earlier this year, Primoris began construction on a pair of solar projects in Indiana that currently are set to wrap up in the third quarter of 2025: Capital Dynamics Limited's (New York, New York) $200 million Ratts 1 Solar Plant near Petersburg, which is expected to generate 150 MW, and Ranger Power's (Chicago, Illinois) $175 million Speedway Solar Plant in Gwynneville, which is expected to generate 199 MW.

Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) agreed last year to purchase all the power generated from the Speedway plant. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Ratts 1 and Speedway projects.

On the natural gas side, PSC Primoris ARB, a subsidiary of Primoris based in California, is performing EPC services for one of the highest-valued projects in the company's portfolio that is nearing completion: the $600 million addition of a unit at the Silverhawk Generating Station in Las Vegas, Nevada, which will add 440 MW to the 666.2-MW, gas-fired power plant. The new unit will comprise two simple-cycle combustion-turbine sets from General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts).

The Silverhawk plant is owned by NV Energy, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated (NYSE:BRK.A) (Omaha, Nebraska), which says the new unit will bolster system reliability in a region that increasingly sees extreme and unpredictable weather.
