Saudi Arabia's SPPC Announces Bids for 4.5 GW Solar and Wind Projects

October 7, 2024--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has opened tenders to select developers for the sixth round of the country's National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). SPPC, responsible for managing the tendering process and purchasing the energy from these projects, has issued a request for qualification (RFQ) to identify potential developers. The NREP is overseen by the Ministry of Energy.

The sixth round aims to develop a total of 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy across five locations in Saudi Arabia's Central and Southern Provinces. The projects include:
  • 1,500-megawatt (MW) Dawadmi Wind IPP in Riyadh (Central Province)
  • 1,400-MW Najran Solar IPP in Najran (Southern Province)
  • 600-MW Samtah Solar PV IPP in Jizan (Central Province)
  • 600-MW Darab Solar PV IPP in Jizan (Southern Province)
  • 400-MW Sufun Solar PV IPP in Hail (Central Province)
Saudi Arabia aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its power mix to 50% by the end of the decade. So far, SPPC has allocated 19 GW of renewable energy capacity. Starting in 2024, the company plans to issue annual tenders for an additional 20 GW, with a goal of achieving 100 to 130 GW of total renewable energy capacity by 2030.
